Weekly Reminders!

Hello Kindergarten Families!
We are into another month and preparing for the holiday season! Here a few reminders for this week:
1) Christmas Concert Practice: Please start practicing your parts at home!

2) Homework: As always, students will have the entire week to complete homework in their pink scrapbooks (collected on Fridays). Please have your child draw and colour a picture in the Christmas bulb about what Christmas is for them. We will be putting these on our classroom tree. I will be handing out the alphabet books and ABC flashcards on Mondays and Wednesdays, hoping to get through them all before Christmas. Students will read their books and identify letters for me on Wednesday and Friday so please return materials on those days. New baggy books and sight words will be coming home after the holidays, so we want to keep working on letter recognition before Christmas!

3) Agendas: Students will begin to print homework and important notes in their agendas so I encourage you to keep checking for any new information.

4) Painting Shirt: If you haven’t already sent in a smock or shirt for painting, please do so as we will be painting soon!

5) Library Tickets: Please return library fundraiser tickets and money on or before Friday, December 7th.

Thank you,
Mrs. Power

Alphabet Activities

Students will begin to bring home alphabet flash cards this week to continue reinforcement of letter recognition and production of letter sounds. There are 7 baggies containing 3 or 4 cards which will be rotated among students on a weekly basis. Please practice the activities with your child. They will have an opportunity to show me what they learned at the end of each week!

Here is a great website for letter games and beginning readers you may wish to try with your child.

Play and Learn Week!

As indicated in the Memo I sent home on Friday, Play and Learn Week is happening across the province from Monday November 5th to Friday November 9th. The focus is on the importance of including play in your child's daily life. You can check out the initiative here: http://www.ed.gov.nl.ca/edu/earlychildhood/power.html

Your child will be bringing home promotional materials when we receive them and will be involved in a number of activities at the school. The schedule is as follows:

Monday: Classroom Scavenger Hunt
Tuesday: Games of Days Gone By - Parents Invited 2:30 pm to 3:30 pm*
Wednesday: Design Your Own Game**
Thursday: Parent Information Session and Play Period in the Gym - Parents Invited 2:30 pm to 3:30 pm
Friday: Artwork Day

*On Tuesday we will be having a brief discussion of games of the past. Please note that these 'old fashioned' games may not be that old. The games of today, as you know are often high-tech like DS video game systems, so Barrel of Monkeys, Guess Who, Hopscotch, KerPlunk, and even card games like Go Fish can be considered 'old fashioned' today! If you are available, please come to the Kindergarten classroom at 2:30 pm ready to have some game-playing fun with your child. Bring along any games you would like to share. There will also be games available in the classroom to play.

**If you tried making up a game with your child at home, Wednesday will be their opportunity to share their game with classmates. Feel free to send along a brief note on how to play. Not to worry if your child didn't make up a game. They will have an opportunity today to make one up in school. Links to check out for help:

Welcome!

Welcome Kindergarten Families! I thought it might be beneficial to start an online blog to keep you informed about things that are going on in our classroom. Of course we will continue to send along memos and notes in the agenda, however this is just another way to keep you updated and involved in your child's school life. Look for reminders of things that are happening, ways you can help/reinforce your child's learning at home, and updates to new topics and themes we are learning about. Stay tuned!
